We believe that FUN is an important foundation in any family culture.
Kids in today’s world are busier than ever. Their parents (that’s us!) are also busier than ever. After a full day of school, we race them to activities. Our weekends are full of tournaments. They’re bombarded by materialism and the next “must have” thing. That’s why families need fun.
Kids need to have fun. Play. Laugh. With YOU.
When planning our family culture, fun was a big part of it. Here’s three big reasons why families need fun:
1. Fun builds connection.
When you have fun with your child, you are creating a connection with them. There is nothing quite like laughing with someone to bring you closer together.
Fun heals hurts and reduces stress. It breaks down walls and softens hard relationships. Fun lets down your guard and opens the door for greater connection.
2. Fun assures forgiveness & unconditional love.
It’s inevitable that we will need to discipline our children. There will be moments of conflict or tension between a parent and child.
When we say, “I forgive you” to our child, we can reinforce that with fun. It tells our child, “I still like you and I still enjoy being with you.” Playing together after discipline gives kids a sense of safety and assures them of their unwavering place within the family.
Fun shows our kids that we love them no matter what.
3. Fun drops anchors.
Whether it’s on vacation, a weekend, or a random Tuesday night — creating fun memories with your kids can create lifelong memories.
As kids grow into teenagers and young adults, their relationship with parents can change. Sometimes there’s tension, conflict, or just an increased distance. But fun memories with your child are like anchors — places you can always return to and reflect upon. It’s a point of connection that can bring relationships closer, even if just for a moment.
How do you find fun things to do?
If you live in Minnesota, I’ve compiled a FREE list of 80 Free Family Fun Days in Minneapolis/St. Paul. About half of them are available year-round and the other half are events listed by month. We’ve enjoyed them all!
You may even find something as awesome as recycling bin races on a frozen lake. (What can we say – we’re Minnesotans!)
