We’ve all had those days – grumpy faces, whiny attitudes, grumbling & complaining…I’m talking about me! 😃
Add to the mix some bickering siblings, messy beds, a barking dog, and it’s time for a reset.
There’s an even split between whether I’ll yell, cry, or walk away.
These moments require a deep breath and some intentional action.
I once heard that the only way to fight negative thoughts is to speak positive words.
Don’t believe me? Here’s the example we teach our kids: Picture a red dog.
Really…close your eyes and picture a red dog. (How are you still reading this with your eyes closed?)
Picture it in close detail — big or small? Long or short fur? Waging tail? Anyone picturing Clifford the Big Red Dog?
The only way to fight negative thoughts is to speak positive words.
Close your eyes and picture the dog as if it were real. Then, say out loud, “PURPLE CAT.”
What happened to the red dog?
It disappeared from your mind! All that time studying the red dog, looking at the red dog, and it’s instantly erased by a few short spoken words.
We need to flip the script in our mind toward something positive. Something hopeful. Something promising.
There’s no better place to find encouragement than God’s Word! The Bible is filled with God’s promises for us and our families.
When I feel overwhelmed, instead of thinking, “I can’t do this!” I try to say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
So if you ever see me talking to myself, you know what’s up. 😂
The Bible is such a vast source of encouragement and guidance, it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start. Below are seven encouraging Bible verses for parents – one for every day of the week, and all of them are especially helpful on hard days!
James 1:19 | My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 | Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Lamentations 3:22-23 | Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Philippians 4:6-7 | Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Proverbs 4:23 | Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Ephesians 4:32 | Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
